You may see paper plates listed as 160gsm, 190gsm, 210gsm, 230gsm, 250gsm, 300gsm, 350gsm or even 400gsm. At first glance, the difference may seem small. In reality, paper weight can affect the plate’s rigidity, handling, production cost and suitability for different foods.

What Does GSM Mean on a Paper Plate?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It describes the weight of the paperboard itself per square metre.
Generally speaking, a higher GSM means more material is used, and heavier paperboard will usually feel more substantial and rigid. However, GSM should not be treated as a direct measurement of thickness or load capacity.
Two paperboards with the same GSM can have different thickness, stiffness and performance depending on their fibre composition, density and manufacturing process.

160gsm is particularly attractive when cost efficiency is important. It can work well for desserts, snacks, cakes, fruit and other lighter foods. For high-volume programs, using a lighter board can help keep the product competitive.
190gsm provides a stronger balance between price and rigidity. It is one of the most popular specifications for standard white paper plates and is suitable for many everyday applications.
210gsm provides additional rigidity and a more substantial feel. It can be a good choice for meals, catering, parties and applications where buyers want something stronger than an economy plate.
For standard white round plates, particularly 6-inch, 7-inch and 9-inch sizes, 190gsm and 210gsm are often strong choices for wholesale programs.
230gsm–300gsm: When You Need More Structure
Once you move into 230gsm to 300gsm, the plate generally becomes more substantial.
This range is particularly relevant for printed paper plates, party products and larger or deeper plate designs.
Printed plates are commonly produced with heavier board because the product often needs to maintain good rigidity while also providing a quality printing surface.
For larger plates such as 8.5-inch and 10.5-inch deep plates, 250gsm or 300gsm can be a better choice when the application involves heavier food.
This is especially relevant for BBQs, parties and larger meals where the plate needs to feel stable in the customer’s hand.
350gsm–400gsm: For Heavy-Duty Applications
At 350gsm to 400gsm, you’re moving into a much heavier board specification.
These weights may be suitable when a customer requires a particularly rigid or premium-feeling plate.
However, heavier does not automatically mean better.
Using 400gsm paper for a product that only needs 160gsm can unnecessarily increase material consumption, product weight and cost.
For distributors and retailers, this can make the product less competitive.
The right question is not:
“What’s the heaviest paper you can use?”
It is:
“What is the lightest specification that reliably performs the job?”
That is usually a much better purchasing strategy.
Does Higher GSM Mean Better Leak Resistance?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the most important points for buyers to understand.
GSM primarily tells you about the weight of the paperboard, not whether a plate is waterproof or leak-proof.
Oil and liquid resistance can be affected by the paperboard itself, coating, coating weight, manufacturing process and the type of food being served.
A heavier paper plate without suitable coating or structure may still have limitations with oily or liquid foods.
For buyers dealing with greasy foods, sauces or wet meals, it is therefore important to ask the supplier about the paperboard construction and coating, rather than simply requesting a higher GSM.
How to Avoid Incorrect GSM Claims
When comparing paper plate suppliers, don’t rely only on the number written on a quotation.
Ask the supplier to confirm the actual paperboard GSM used for production.
For larger orders, buyers can also request material specifications or arrange third-party testing when necessary.
It is also useful to compare the finished plate rather than looking only at the sample.
Check the plate’s dimensions, weight, rigidity, rim structure and overall appearance.
If two suppliers both quote “190gsm”, but one finished plate feels noticeably different, there may be differences in the paperboard, density, construction or production process.
For serious importers, consistency across repeat orders is just as important as the initial sample.
Choose GSM According to Your Market
A good paper plate program normally includes several GSM options rather than one specification for every product.
For economical everyday products, 160gsm can provide excellent value.
For standard white plates, 190gsm and 210gsm are often the most practical choices.
For printed plates, larger sizes and deeper designs, 230gsm and above may be more appropriate.
For particularly large or heavy-duty applications, 250gsm, 300gsm, 350gsm or 400gsm can be considered depending on the design and intended use.
The best specification is the one that gives your customer the performance they need without adding unnecessary material cost.
